Hello and welcome. I'm Shingayi Elle!
I'm the founder and editor of Africa Moto (Africa Fire) blog. If you are looking to learn more about African textiles, travel and design you have come to the right place.
I started this blog to share the positive story of Africa and inspire you to travel and explore African design.
I have always had a passion for good design and making things. My mother opened a clothing factory and a clothing boutique in Zimbabwe when I was 12 years old. I spent most of my time after school helping out. I learned first hand the in and outs of running an apparel manufacturing business. When I moved to the US for college, I took every opportunity I could to tell people to visit Africa.
After my son was born, my husband and I moved to Bamako, Mali. I decided to use the opportunity to revive my ethical design passion. I launched an African-inspired kids and home accessories company. In Mali, I discovered the beauty of handwoven textiles and the potential of slow design to change lives. That experience gave me the chance to put into practice some of the lessons I learned from working with my mom. Back in the US, I now play and create things with my large fabric stash and experiment with making my own fabric prints.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Feel free to contact me with questions, thoughts or to simply say hello!
